Artis Construction Honored by 2025 Carolopolis Awards

Conferred in February 2026 at a ceremony held at the College of Charleston’s Sottile Theatre, 11 diverse projects spanning architectural styles and locales were recognized with 2025 Carolopolis Awards. Artis Construction was honored to receive two of the coveted awards for work on historically significant properties.

129 Broad Street Exterior

Constructed in 1887 and located at the corner of Broad and Legare Street, Eggert Heinsohn's Grocery and residence is an excellent example of a late 19th century mixed-use, 2-story corner building that conforms to Charleston's traditional architectural style.

A recent exterior rehabilitation was designed by Glenn Keyes Architects and restored by Artis Construction. The project called for the entire structure to be scaffolded, fabric awnings, abandoned pipes and wiring removed, and windows and doors fully restored including the historic storefront featuring transomed double doors.

Additionally, a copper roof with matching gutters and downspouts were added along with repairs to the structure’s continuous stucco base, all masonry chimneys, the wood piazza and balustrade. The building was finished with an elegant new paint/stain scheme.

Rotating art installations offer color and interest to the Broad Street-facing historic glass storefront.

Hutchinson House Exterior

Vacant and in disrepair since the 1980s, Artis Construction partnered with Edisto Island Open Land Trust on a plan to revive the circa 1885 Hutchinson House, an example of Reconstruction-era African American domestic architecture and a building of deep historical and emotional significance to the Hutchinson family descendants and Edisto Island community.

Artis Construction’s work focused on stabilizing the structure through building an exoskeleton to support its fragile walls. Commenting on the meticulous exterior restoration, Artis’ co-founder Guyton Ash said “We basically dissembled the facades piece by piece, cataloging and evaluating each pine board to see what could be salvaged and what needed replacement.”

In addition to the honor from Preservation Society of Charleston, the exterior restoration was recognized in Spring 2021 by Historic Charleston Foundation with its annual Robert N.S. and Patti Foos Whitelaw Award for the long-term protection and preservation of important buildings and places.
