Artis Project Presented with 2019 Carolopolis Award

In late January 2020, the Preservation Society of Charleston honored several buildings in the Lowcountry with Carolopolis Awards, a designation recognizing projects exhibiting “exemplary efforts in preservation.” First established in 1953, the Carolopolis Award has been bestowed on some 1,400 distinguished projects.

Built in 1837, Secessionville Manor is a vernacular raised summer cottage designed in the Greek Revival style defined by its piazza with classical columns. A collaboration with Dufford Young Architects, the 2017-2019 rehabilitation project included the removal of inappropriate infill at bays below the porch, as well as the refenestration of the remaining bays.

Also of note was the replacement of the non-historic 1/1 window within the gable with an elegant fanlight window. Other historic fabric including windows, doors, siding, trim, and roofing were repaired or replaced in-kind, and the porch structure was stabilized by repointing masonry piers, sistering historic frame members, and realigning skewed columns.
